March Look Ahead Blog

March Look Ahead Blog

Hi there folks! Welcome to our March look ahead blog. In the interest of helping folks stay up on new comic series and happenings well before they hit the shelves, we're delving into the catalogues each month to put forth reviews and recommendations as well as notifications about new series for popular franchises and tie-ins for big crossovers. So if you were wondering what's new and fun coming out this March, read on and find out more!

Reviews and Recommendations

Looking for a new series or two to follow? Here are a few recommendations for new series courtesy of Team Phoenix! This month's reviews are all from Nick!

Little Monsters

Image Comics, Writer Jeff Lemire, Artist Dustin Nguyen

Kid Vampires + Post-Apocalypse = what looks like a pretty cool new book by Jeff. I'm not normally a big fan of his artwork, but the previews I saw definitely gives me some serious Descender style vibes. And I think Dustin Nguyen really sells it on the art!

Season of the Bruja

Oni Press, Writer Aaron Durán, Artist Sara Soler

This book's art gives off really fun Witch Boy / Girl Haven vibes, and the story promises to be a fun YA tale about a witchy Portland hipster who's maybe also a demon hunter / occult protector / comes from a long-line of bruja. Also, heck yes let's have some more comics that focus on mixed-race protagonists and celebrate a bit of that diversity!

World's Finest

DC Comics, Writer Mark Waid, Artist Dan Mora

You had me at Mark Waid writing a Batman / Superman comic. Waid's responsible for a lot of my favorite DC arcs over the years (his run on Flash is pretty amazing IMO), and Dan Mora's responsible for those amazingly colorful and vivid pages of Once & Future. You put these two together and you get a book I am absolutely looking forward to reading.

Captain Carter (5 Issue Mini-Series)

Marvel Comics, Writer Jamie McKelvie, Artist Marika Cresta

You may remember Jamie from his artist work in this little image book called the Wicked + the Divine (or also Young Avengers), but he's also really good at writing them comics too! Straight out of the What-if? Disney+ series, we've got the what-happens-next story of Peggy post her version of the time skip. If you're a fan of that, you definitely want to check this out.

What if...Miles Morales (5 issue Mini-Series)

Marvel Comics, Writer Cody Ziglar, Artist Paco Medina

This is an excuse to draw Miles as a bunch of different Marvel comics characters and I love it. Issue 1 features him as Cap, but we're gonna see him as other folks too (issue 2 is him as Wolverine and that costume looks sweet). This looks like a fun book, and as someone who likes one-shot style stories, I think I'm down for this.

Godzilla vs Power Rangers (5 issue Mini-Series)

IDW Comics, Writer Cullen Bunny, Artist Freddie Williams II

I'm really surprised this hasn't already happened. But here you go - teenagers who pile into giant mecha vs the king of all monsters. Two good things that go good together. Like peanut butter and...giant radioactive-fire-spewing jelly.

Yes. Exactly like that.

Noteworthy Tie-Ins

For the second half of this little post we'll be trying to help you stay up to date on any crossovers or tie-ins that might be popping up. We won't be covering things in detail as much in this section, instead our goal is to give you some cursory info on each series and let you decide for yourself how deep of a dive you want to do. For the most part, we'll limit things in this section to the big two (Marvel / DC), but if something else comes up that's noteworthy, we'll endeavor to include it here too.

 X-Men (aka Marvel)

If you're an X-Fan, you've got 3 books to add to your pull list this month:

  • X-Men Unlimited (a digital to print book by Jonathan Hickman)
  • Immortal X-Men by Kieron Gillen
  • Marauders series by Steve Orlando (new first issue)

There's also the final chapter of the Demon Days series hits the shelves as Demon Days: Blood Feud. And as if that's not enough, Larry Hama returns to his Wolverine-roots with a Wolverine: Patch 5 issue mini-series.

Marauders Note: If you're down for the old series of Marauders, we'll be pulling  copy of issue #1 of the Steve Orlando reboot for you. If you want more than that, please remember to add the new series to your pull list!

DC Comics

There are a few noteworthy titles in the DC section that are tie-ins or follow-ups to other series. Those books include Batman Beyond the White Knight, Naomi Season 2, the Wonder Woman Trial of the Amazons crossover, and a War for Earth-3 crossover.

Trial of the Amazons is gonna be a 7 part / 2 month crossover across most of the Wonder Woman line. The exact line-up includes:

  • Trial of the Amazons #1
  • Nubia & the Amazons #6
  • Wonder Woman #785
  • Trial of the Amazons: Wonder Girl #1
  • Wonder Woman #786 (March)
  • Trial of the Amazons: Wonder Girl #2 (March)
  • Trial of the Amazons #2 (March)

War for Earth-3 is going to be a Teen Titans / Flash / Suicide Squad crossover (plus the cast of Earth-3, the good old Crime Syndicate). The full rundown of this 5 issue crossover looks like this:

  • War for Earth-3 #1
  • War for Earth-3 #2
  • Suicide Squad #13
  • Flash #780
  • Teen Titans Academy #13

Bonus - if you get all five regular covers, they make a nice little panorama!

Fun One-Shots and Nice-To-Haves

Galaxy The Prettiest Star

DC Comics, Writer Jadzia Axelrod, Artist Jess Taylor

When I saw this book coming out from DC I had to do a double take because it takes the DC young adult house style and tosses it out the window (and into near earth orbit). This trans-alien-coming-out story is absolutely beautifully illustrated and I may have ordered way too many of this book because I am absolutely enamored with the style (but also - YA + trans-friendly books are things we need more of please).

Image One Shots!

Image is putting out a bevy of one-shot stories this month, and I know folks are probably gonna want at least a few of them! I don't have a lot to say about any of these, but I felt it was important for folks to know they're out there in case anyone wants them!

Astro City: That was then...

Kurt Busiek returns to Astro City! There are a bunch of lovely covers for this book, so if you're interested make sure to confirm which cover is your preference (otherwise we'll just pull the A cover).

Stillwater: the Escape

Note: We'll be pulling this for all you Stillwater subscribers out there!

The Ghost in You (a Reckless HC)

Heyyy you Ed Brubaker / Sean Phillips fans out there - we've got another one for you!

And that's it for this month's look ahead! We'll be back later this month for another look at what's in store for you comics fans in April. In the meantime, if you'd like to subscribe to any of these books, we've got you covered! Follow this link and let us know which comics you'd like to add to your pull list, or if you don't have one going yet, you can also start up a pull list in that very same link.
