Phoenix Holiday Board Game Guide - 2023 Edition

Phoenix Holiday Board Game Guide - 2023 Edition

The holiday season is the perfect time to gather with family and friends, and what better way to bond than over a board game? Board games are not only entertaining but also promote social interaction, prblem solving, and critical thinking skills. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to choose the right game for your holiday gathering. That's why we've compiled a list of our favorite board game recommendations that are sure to bring endless fun to your festivities.

Fun for the Family

We're starting out our board game recommendations with a few games that are light on the rules and heavy on the fun, making them the perfect thing for family gatherings. In addition, most of these games accomodate anywhere from 2 up to 6 or more people, so if your gatherings get a bit larger this year, you can still fit an extra person or two into the fun.

Wavelength

We keep recommending this game over and over gain cause it's just that good. Wavelength is a simple party-style game for 2-12 players that asks teams of players to compete in a mind-reading competition. Each team will try to tune into the psychic wavelength of one of their players by trying to hit a hidden target range via a dial that gets turned to the left or right. The 'psychic' player will give hot/cold style clues to try to get the rest of their team to guess which way to turn the dial.

Hues and Cues

Hues and Cues has the honor of being a game so easy that my family taught it to me not the other way round. Hues and Cues asks players to take turns giving a pair of hints about a color somewhere on this giant spectrum of a color board. Once each player other than the cue-giver has had a chance to make two guesses, the player who gave the cues places a little square box down around the specific color they were referencing. Anyone who managed to guess the right color gets 3 points, anyone who got close (inside the square) gets 2 points, and anyone who's touching the outside of the square gets 1 point. And the cue-giver gets 1 point for everyone who landed inside the box.

For the Strategic Minded

Looking for a gift for an avid board gamer? Why not try out one of these recommendations. Each of these games need solid strategic thinking to win.

Flamecraft

Not only is Flamecraft a fun light-mid weight strategy game that combines elements of worker placement and set collection with a modular board, but it is absolutely gorgeous and adorable. The board itself is a durable playmat that rolls up to go inside the box, and all of the dragon workers and shops have fun little pun-names (like Loaf the bread-dragon or Venti the potion-dragon). And at a play-time of 30-45 minutes a game, this one's an easy one to fit into any board game night.

Ark Nova

Ark Nova's probably the heaviest game on our recommendation list bar none. This is a game for the board game enthusiast. Someone who likes taking time to think through their turns and maximize their moves. Ark Nova is a worker-placement style zoo management game. Players design, build, and manage their own zoos to support a variety of animals and conservation projects. It's a spendy game at $74.99, but don't let that disuade you from giving it a try. It's consistently ranked up in the top twenty games on Board Game Geek for the better part of this year, and it's gobbled up a ton of board game awards and nominations along the way.

Classics and New Classics

Helping someone build up a board game library of their own? Here's a few recommendations for what to stock at the core of your board game collection.

Azul (and Azul Mini)

It wouldn't be a Phoenix board game guide without mentioning Azul (and Splendor below). Azul's a fantastic tile drafting game that's both easy to teach and has tons of depth hiding just below the surface. Players take turns drafting tiles and filling up rows on their board, taking care not to draft more than they need. Once all tiles in a round have been drafted, any full rows are scored and added to the player's total. Players get bonus points for completing as much of their mosiac as possible, and game play proceed until one player finishes an entire horizontal row.

Azul's been on our recommendation list for a couple of years now, but this year we got a mini-version that compacts into a nice easy to carry bag. Not only that, but the game boards in the mini-version have built-in divots so that the tiles slot neatly into place. The perfect thing if you're planning to travel to the family this holiday season.

Splendor (and Splendor Duel)

Splendor is a favorite of nearly every Phoenix team member when it comes to strategy board game picks. Players race to fifteen points while gathering up gems, buying gem development cards, reserving cards for future purchase, and vying for the attention of noble patrons. It's simple, easy to teach and works well at its base two players all the way up to the full four. Plus it's got a fun expansion pack that adds four mini-expansions to the game.

For those of you doing a smaller gathering this year, Splendor Duel is the optimized 2-player only version of the game. It adds a drafting mechanic to spice up the resource availability issue that occasionally crops up in the main game at 2 players, and it's broadly optimized for the back-and-forth play experience you get with regular Splendor at just two people.

These holiday board game recommendations are just the tip of the iceberg. There are countless other games out there to suit every taste and occasion, and here at Phoenix we're happy to help find you the perfect game to meet your needs. Whether you're a fan of strategy, wordplay, or cooperative challenges, board games offer a world of entertainment for everyone. So gather your loved ones, clear the table, and get ready for a memorable holiday season filled with laughter, friendly competition, and endless fun!
